Our History

Charting a Legacy of Precision and Performance

A look at the key moments that shaped Horizon Shipping, from our founding in 1990 to our role today as a trusted parcel operator in global dry bulk logistics.

1990-2004
 Foundations in Parceling

Founded in 1990 by Mr. Ernesto Garcia in Vancouver, Horizon Shipping began operations focused on dry bulk parceling from Peruvian ports to Mediterranean receivers. In 1994, the company restructured under sole ownership. During this period, Horizon established itself as a reliable operator within the WCSA export market, developing long-term relationships with miners and traders. Operating approximately 40–50 time-chartered Handy vessels annually, the company moved 1 million metric tons per year, primarily mineral concentrates and base metals.

2004–2009
Strategic Growth & Diversification

In 2004, Horizon welcomed Ultranav as a strategic shareholder, adding commercial and operational synergies that expanded its reach and reinforced its position within the WCSA parceling segment. Horizon strengthened its core trades to the US Gulf, Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Black Sea, while building platform volume and launching parceling services to the Far East and India, enhancing frequency and optionality for cargo stakeholders.

2009–2019
 Regional Leadership & Volume Growth

Between 2009 and 2019, Horizon’s volume scaled from 1.5 million to 6 million metric tons annually, supported by 100–150 T/C fixtures per year utilizing Handy, Supramax, and Ultramax vessels. The business model retained its defining features: high vessel turnover, flexible parcel allocation, and an enduring focus on mining sector cargo. In 2019, Ultranav acquired 100% ownership, integrating Horizon into its global portfolio while preserving its operational identity and WCSA specialization.
